A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
