A Significant Event as Liam Rosenior Shatters Boundaries

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent coach that understands the game intimately, and that's what matters most.

"However, as Chelsea's first black footballer, I would be lying to claim this news does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments of Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

This week, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

There have been only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including those holding temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he understands this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions what's right… that's impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents an enormous step for Chelsea, for London, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Does the Data Show?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's first black manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of ethnic minority managers across English football corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from black heritage.

However, research by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching positions, based on data from eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented communities... they want the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to continue to work hard to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become one of only four permanent British head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining big five leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every young English managers with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational for young English coaches in the system to witness an individual land that job with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not determine ability arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand of players from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "ashamed" upon hearing a staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's first black boss in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
