Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned UK Gear to Locate Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
An informant has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned classified equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who collaborated with allied troops.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger
The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the information breach were advised to change residences and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are investigating the Conservative government's management of a serious breach of private information concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain to flee the Taliban.
The Information Breach Happened
A data file including confidential details, including names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at special operations center in February 2022.
The incident was discovered months later, when details of nine people who had requested to relocate to Britain were posted on online platforms.

When questioned about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, the whistleblower stated: “They have complete capability.”
Consequences of the Information Leak
Early investigations provided to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and associates of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised individuals at risk they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained these details, would cause them being traced,” she said.

The whistleblower argued that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not confronting the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”
The source explained horrific violence endured by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of young kids who have had their arms broken to force households to reveal locations,” she testified.
