Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The gang of attackers invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
