Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Political Adversary

He has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would increase the party's House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested revoking the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he stated, after a this week's fatal crash in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before indicated he was blocking $40m from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted survey revealed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while visiting several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
