Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He fought the legal system and justice prevailed.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a 27-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems headed to prison.

Imminent Jailing

The found-guilty instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his mansion while a number of court processes and petitions unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amid mounting talk that he will be transferred to a infamous top-security facility.

Historical Statements on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative ex- soldier displayed little compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, four of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he anticipated the elderly leader to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding 40 inmates: “That is virtually one square metre per prisoner.

“We spoke to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure expressing views before the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Penning in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its record”.

“It is an unfairness that erodes the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Response

That may be true considering the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. But his predicted incarceration has also pleased the spirits of millions individuals who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even scheming to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's allied group, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain respectful handling – but dignified handling in prison. He cannot persist being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the harsh treatment of convicts, had suddenly become aware to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has always asserted that civil liberties should not be for criminals – opted to inspect a penitentiary to find out what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“He is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Possible Incarceration Environment

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 detainees, his expected assigned facility looks to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “special” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

As per reports, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – about the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be authorized to have a set and additionally a cooler in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” information indicated.

Political Comments

He denounced the speculated plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his outcome in the {
