Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
