The Dominik Diamond Unofficial Video Game of the Year List for 2025
Alright, how did you experience 2025 in your household? Could it be described as truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Full of A-grades for the children and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a swamp of disappointment with only sporadic entertaining moments? Is any of this genuine, or have we all become AI-generated AI slop beings with unrealistic teeth?
I've assembled my thoughts for a chat, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the most important thing in twelve months: which video games we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Title Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"It’s not my personal ranking."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In real life."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Point taken.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the start. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this stunning, original game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after family time.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play at any hour. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Toss-up between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
