As he approaches his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that first major trophy stands as his only major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played just after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

With trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that success is required sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the players' commitment as most crucial. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the Everton match dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is likely to keep him out for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
