The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future administration of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of the population prefer the war to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city indicated another two victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, health workers reported.
