Official Departure
The head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, announced her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for Habba to lead the department effectively.
"But do not mistake adherence to the ruling as defeat," Habba stated. "This battle will now extend throughout the country."
Judicial Challenge
Her resignation comes a week after a federal appellate panel found that she had been serving in violation of the law as the top prosecutor. This decision is expected to impact scores of prosecutions in the state.
The judicial panel said that a acting appointment that did not receive Senate approval ran afoul of the statute on vacant positions.
