A comprehensive search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for two unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than 9 personnel, per a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Aid Delivery

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Larger International Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country began.

International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic pressure have intensified over the past months, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complicated state of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent comments, a senior Cuban official declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains unclear.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
