Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted during his trip to the US capital that Vladimir Putin's move to request talks with Donald Trump demonstrates Moscow is feeling pressure. He remarked, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to resume dialogue as soon as it learns of cruise missiles." This statement addressed recent comments about providing advanced missiles to the Ukrainian military.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "Putin is attempting to disrupt the momentum toward increased sanctions on the Kremlin." He added, "We'll see on Friday, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pushing Moscow to get serious seem to have diminished."

The development came after the US president had recently been hardening his language toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with the Russian president, which the Kremlin characterized as "extremely frank and constructive."

EU Fuel Sanctions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have set a mandate for energy suppliers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian crude, according to a official guideline released on Thursday. This step is part of the EU's forthcoming prohibition on imports of refined products processed from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its war in Ukraine.

Financial analysts noted that trading patterns appeared to be factoring in the possible reduction of Indian imports of Russian oil. Some Indian refiners are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with expectations of a phased reduction, as reported by insiders familiar with the situation.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a big customer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, noting that crude values were stable on the trading day.

Military Situation and Energy Strikes

A massive Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile attack targeted gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in eight regions. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russian forces deployed numerous of drones and many of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," said Ukraine's president, adding that strikes impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Global Diplomatic Reactions

Kyiv's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Moscow showed its real approach to negotiations through the "terror" of these attacks. "Russia once again opted for weapons over dialogue, making this attack into a clear blow to current diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

At the same time, the European Union's foreign policy chief, the bloc's representative, stated that the EU had no choice but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for potential security challenges by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. EU authorities aims to secure the backing of member state representatives at a meeting next week.
