Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
